Les Alchimistes - Gobelins graduation short film 2023
Pitch : Thibaut, an alchemy apprentice, is finally starting his graduate internship. His slightly eccentric master brings him to a dubious-looking dungeon…
In the original concept for this film, Julien and I wanted to focus on telling a fictional story that relied on European medieval imagery. However, upon learning another student film was headed in that direction we decided to explore how our storytelling could be enhanced by adding elements of fantasy and Alchemy.
Along the way, we consulted with Paul-Georges Sansonetti, a specialist in literature, comparative mythology, cinema and graphic arts, who opened the doors to a rich symbolic world for us! Furthermore, our ambition was to apply Hollywood's writing techniques from the 80’s and 90’s, used by authors such as Christopher Vogler, Joseph Campbell and Carl Gustav Jung.
To bring the project to life, we were joined by, our classmates Adrien Dang (layout), Loan Estevez (Chara designer), and Angèle Legars (lead anim / story board). Following many discussions between us (and lots of jokes), The Alchemists evolved into the vibrant comedic short you see today.
Bonjour,
I grew up in the heart of the French Alps, between lakes and mountains, in a setting highly evocative of fantasy adventures. With free access to the family movie library, I developed a passion for motion pictures very early on.
Having recieved a degree in Fine Arts at Emile Cohl, I then completed a Masters degree in Character Animation and Animated Filmmaking from the Gobelins School in Paris.
At the end of my studies, I had the opportunity to work as a 2d Animation Assistant for Yoshimichi Tamura, a former Disney animator. Most recently I was contacted by Program33 and Circus, two animation and production studios in Paris, to develop an original project for an animated feature film. I'm joined on this project by my colleague Julien Motteau, with whom I wrote and directed The Alchemist for Gobelins Paris.
These days, I split my time working between Los Angeles and Paris and am open to opportunites in both cities.
